About me

Emma Mckenna

Emma grew up in Northern Ireland. she has been living in France for three years now and is based in the south of France.

As an interpreter, and keen reader and traveller, she has a wide range of interests and love learning about new subjects! She also loves blogging so follow her blog to keep up to date with her latest French adventures.

Her passion for languages

Since her childhood she has always been interested in different languages and cultures. She was lucky enough to visit new places with her parents every summer and this further sparked her interest in languages.

She has also always been interested in politics and history and then discovered that the job of an interpreter existed and she knew that was for her! After her degree she completed her Masters degree and lived in France and Spain during her studies, trying to improve her language skills whenever she could. she love living in France and discovering more about the French language and culture!

She is also an avid reader and love using her language skills to translate written texts on all kinds of topics!

Translation vs interpreting

Translation involves translating solely written texts and documents. This means that the original text needs to make sense and be grammatically correct so that the translator can do the best job possible when translating the document into a different language.

Interpreting involves translating the spoken word. There are many different forms of interpreting such as conference, liaison and ‘chuchotage’ interpreting. All require a lot of concentration and preparation, information on key words and technical terms or any useful documents should be provided to the interpreter before a mission.

Hire a translator/interpreter

With so many tech devices available you may be wondering, why do you need a translator/interpreter? Machine translation is useful, yes but a machine is essentially a machine. Language is living, breathing and inextricably linked to a particular culture and persons. Every language has nuances and cultural references that are constantly changing. So a translation needs to incorporate that! A human translator/interpreter can do this for you because they understand context and cultural awareness. So stop depending on technology and let a human brain do the hard work! That way your translation will read as an original text and not a translation and an interpreter will help break down language barriers between you and your clients!

Behind ‘Le Petit Accent’

The name ‘le petit accent’ pretty much sums up almost every conversation she has ever had in French! What she means is that it doesn’t take long for people to realise she is not a native French speaker. About five minutes into any conversation, someone will say ‘ça vient d’où ce petit accent?‘ ( where is your accent from)? Thus ‘le petit accent‘ was born.

Her accent in English, on the other hand, is very clear and understandable as she has perfected it over the years! She believes accents make you who you are though, which is another reason she loves hearing different accents throughout language learning!
